current artist statement

I paint not only because I love color, texture, and lines. I paint not only because I love the smell of it, the feel of it, and even the way it dries on my hands. I paint because through it I can assert my will; it gives me power. It gives me power I did not have as a child, nor as a teenager, and not even now as an adult. In a piece of art I can bring into existence things that do not appear anywhere else. I can fulfill desires and I can right wrongs. I can do the impossible.

This current body of work relates to my confronting personal colossal catastrophes, unfortunate addictions and everyday witless patterns: self-made disaster, really. As I’ve been approaching it in a bizarre mix of terribly serious to mildly whimsical ways, a few characters--like the seahorse and the toy “drinking bird”--have emerged. They can be seen peering at each other and overtaking each other’s space. These characters and other motifs seem to be operating as the various selves ("demons", as Bill Clinton put it) that war against, and inside of, one who is fighting for a bit of personal transformation.

Laura Laché Jennings grew up in a small community just southwest of Austin, Texas. Always interested in art, she earned a BFA at Texas State University in studio art along with a teaching certificate. For two years she taught abroad in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. She honed her printmaking skills as a studio assistant for Austin artist Daryl Howard and later attended the University of North Texas, earning an MFA in painting and drawing. Along with art making, she is presently an art teacher at Cedar Park High School near Austin.
